Ontario International Airport - All Information on Ontario International Airport (ONT)

Ontario International Airport is a public airport located in San Bernardino County approximately 2 mi/3.2 km from central Ontario, California, USA as well as 18 mi/29 km west of downtown San Bernardino. Los Angeles is located 38 mi/61 km away.

The airport began as Latimer Field, a landing field, in 1923 on land leased from the Union Pacific Railroad and it got its name from an orange-packing company that was located next to the strip. An airport was built by the Friends of Ontario Airport – one of Southern California’s first flying clubs. The city of Ontario purchased some land and established Ontario Municipal Airport in 1929, which was expanded again 1941 and during the later years of WWII it was used as Army Air Corps Lockheed P-38 Lightning training base as well as North American P-15 Mustang operating base.

The airport was renamed Ontario International Airport in 1946. The airport has undergone expansion and renovations over the decades past since and today it has two runways and two main terminal buildings, Terminal 2 and Terminal 4, as well as a separate international arrivals facility and the old terminal building, Terminal 1, now functions as the Administration Building and it also houses the USO Lounge.

The two terminals are equal in size, although Terminal 2 has 13 gates and Terminal 4 has 14 gates. The international arrivals facility has two gates used for arrivals only. All international departures take place from the main terminals.

The airport’s IATA code is ONT and the ICAO code is KONT. The airport is owned by the City of Ontario/San Bernardino County and is operated by Ontario International Airport Authority as of late 2016 and it changed the name back to its current, and previous, name after the former owner and operator, LAWA (Los Angeles World Airports) had renamed it LA/Ontario International Airport back in 2006. The ownership change came after LAWA’s operation of the airport was criticized and questioned by the city of Ontario (in 2010), backed up by Southern California Association of Governments. The arguments were that LAWA didn’t have any interest in maintaining the services as the airport was not within the City of Los Angeles borders. The airport had seen a decline over a period of some years which reversed in 2017 when the airport, for the first time since 2007, experienced a faster growth than LAX airport.

The airport saw 4,496,592 passengers move through it in 2021, which is a decrease from pre-pandemic 2019 when they saw 5,583,732 passengers come through it. 2020 saw 2,538,482 passengers, a decline due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The airport has two runways, both concrete, of 12,197 ft/3,718 m and 10,200 ft/ 3,109 m respectively.

Ontario International Airport serves Inland Empire as well as the Greater Los Angeles area and it is the hub for UPS Airlines and a focus city for Amazon Air.
